Project Description
Christmas Shorts: 5 Merry Little Comedies
About the Show
As part of Brave New Productions 10th Anniversary Celebration which has included stand-out performances of Yasmina Reza’s “ART” and the ground-breaking “Standing On Ceremony”, we continue our exploration into the universe of short plays by bringing this unexpected, comedic (and sometimes offensive) collection of five holiday shorts. Truly alternative to the usual Holiday pageantry, the five pieces will be directed by BNP Creative Director Donald Rees, and have a limited run at Theatre Ste-Catherine December 6th and 7th, 2013 – a warm and wonderful way to kick off the Holiday Season!
The short plays featured are: “Going Home”, “The Christmas Witch”, “Xmas Cards”, “Nativity”, and the Samuel French Festival award-winning play “The Student”.
“A delightful holiday gift in a small package… A perfect little holiday diversion – funny, entertaining and with just enough warmth of the holidays… ” San Jose Mercury News
“The script is loaded with low-key, sweet humor.” – Las Vegas Review-Journal
“Funny and profane.” – Wisconsin State Journal
“Funny and heartwarming.” – Isthmus Daily Page
“Touching and inspiring… a favorite!” – Indianapolis Performing Arts Examiner
“My favorite piece was The Student by Matt Hoverman. I was surprised to find myself weeping during it. This little two-hander is on both of my BEST OF 2011 lists.” – Indytheatrehabit.com
“Matt Hoverman’s short play The Student, the best piece at City Theatre’s Summer Shortsfestival [is a] masterful comedy of homoerotic repression and twisted yuletide metaphor. The Student is a reminder that with such gifted acting, directing, and writing, minimalism is more than sufficient.” – Miami New Times
